MxNS | Blonk’s Footprint Solution empowers Rabobank to help horticultural entrepreneurs to reduce their CO2-footprint

To accelerate sustainability in the Dutch horticultural sector, Rabobank aims to support horticultural entrepreneurs in getting insights into their CO2-footprint. Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk (MxNS | Blonk) will assist Rabobank with a Digital Footprint Solution, encompassing data collection, CO2-footprint calculations, and an expert Helpdesk. The collected data will serve as the starting point for both uniform and company-specific CO2-footprint calculations, aligned with the latest footprint calculation rules. The results will provide valuable insights for entrepreneurs and the sector to further reduce their CO2-footprint and futureproof their businesses.

Footprint insights

To get accurate footprint insights, data and uniform footprint calculations are needed. Therefore, MxNS | Blonk supports Rabobank with a Digital Footprint Solution, to collect data and calculate accurate and company-specific footprints. The results create a basis for the entrepreneur to adjust their operations, reduce their CO2-footprint, and improve sustainability performance. Ultimately, the results will also be shared at the sector level by Rabobank, allowing entrepreneurs to see how their footprint compares to the sector, and helping them to reduce their CO2-footprint.

Uniform CO2-footprint calculation through a process-oriented approach

A reliable and uniform CO2-footprint calculation is complex and requires a process-oriented approach. Data collection is a crucial step in this process.

"A team from MxNS | Blonk and Rabobank supports horticultural entrepreneurs with data collection via a Helpdesk. Using the Helpdesk, entrepreneurs complete the data form with an expert. After collection, the data is validated. In the next step, the data is used as input for a company-specific CO2-footprint calculation," says Nadine Mooren, Commercial Director from MxNS | Blonk.

"MxNS | Blonk has developed a digital solution for this, based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This solution aligns with international footprint calculation rules, such as the European Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method. The uniform footprint calculation will give more entrepreneurs in the horticultural sector insight into their CO2-footprint, which is essential for sustainable operations. With our knowledge, we can provide Rabobank with the right tools and support to map the footprint for customers and thus make a positive impact on the climate." – Hans Blonk, Managing Director MxNS | Blonk.

Alignment with existing initiatives

In collecting data, existing market initiatives are used as much as possible. Some horticultural entrepreneurs have already performed reliable footprint calculations, for example through MPS or a FVO (Federatie Vruchtgroente Organisatie) growers association. The team from MxNS | Blonk then advises Rabobank on the quality and comparability of these data and results, allowing Rabobank to also incorporate these data and results.

From September '24, customers can start mapping their footprint via the Helpdesk or MPS. Customers will be individually approached by Rabobank for this purpose.
