Who reviewed Agri-footprint 8?

The review was conducted by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Research Group at Agroscope, the Swiss federal center of excellence for agricultural research. Led by senior researcher Dr. Thomas Nemecek alongside co-reviewers Dr. Mara Petruzzelli, Clara Payró, and Martin Stüssi, Agroscope brought extensive domain expertise in agricultural systems, comprehensive LCI modeling capabilities, and complete independence with no conflict of interest.

The challenge: adapting ISO standards to a database review

While the review was framed around ISO 14044, the international framework for conducting and reviewing LCA studies, there is no official ISO standard designed specifically for reviewing a background database. Applying ISO 14044 to Agri-footprint 8 presented two main challenges:

  • No single intended application: ISO 14044 assumes an LCA study with a predefined goal, scope, and target product. In contrast, a background database serves thousands of distinct applications across varied user groups.

  • Adapted verification criteria: Agroscope adapted ISO criteria to verify data collection, transparency, systematic allocation, and global modeling consistency without evaluating a single downstream comparative assertion.

The review process

The review project moved through five structured phases:

1. Kick-off & criteria setting

Defining review scope, establishing ISO-derived criteria, and setting technical handovers.

2. Document & methodology review

Analyzing qualitative and quantitative unit process descriptions, calculation procedures, and data collection standards.

3. In-depth LCI review

Line-by-line checks on selected datasets, verifying flow definitions, metadata completeness, numerical plausibility, and underlying emission models.

4. Statistical & LCIA evaluation

Database-wide statistical audits covering land transformation balances, GWP sub-category aggregation, outlier correlations, and LCIA soundness via ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (H) Blonk v4.2.0.

5. Two-round comment resolution

Iterative cycles to address, refine, and resolve all findings.

6. Post-review evalutation

Concluding the review and forward looking discussion on potential development ideas for Agri-footprint.

Dataset selection strategy

The deep-dive LCI review evaluated 14 key life cycle inventories:

Selection source

Datasets

Rationale & focus area

Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk preselection

5 LCIs

Highlighted core methodological updates:

  • Updated rice paddy methane (China)

  • New fruits (Dutch apples)

  • Updated housing (Danish pigs)

  • New beef system scope (French suckler beef)

  • Solvent extraction (Brazilian soybean meal)

Agroscope selection

9 LCIs

Ensured independent, broad database representation:

  • Geographic diversity (Ethiopian bananas),

  • High-volume commodities (US wheat, Polish maize storage),

  • Production mixes (global watermelon mix),

  • Seafood and processing (Norwegian cod, French cheese)

  • Key industrial inputs (FSU ammonia).

Across two review rounds, Agroscope submitted 214 feedback items: 58 major comments on core ISO compliance, 138 minor comments on metadata and consistency refinements, and 18 forward-looking development suggestions. All comments were addressed prior to the release of Agri-footprint 8. The large majority of these issues, 195 items (91%), have been fully resolved via direct database updates, inventory revisions, and documentation enhancements. A small number of comments, 19 items (9%), could not be accommodated in the current release and have been noted as database limitations or future improvement. These can be found in the Agri-footprint 8 Methodology Report (per dataset type) & Data Report (spchapter 5: Limitations of Agri-footprint, page 15). This provides additional transparency to the end user.

Agroscope’s assessment

Agroscope concluded that Agri-footprint 8 is a comprehensive database for the agri-food sector, with significant updates using recent sources. Dataset generation follows systematic procedures, to a large extent based on global statistics, ensuring comparability across datasets and consistency with global statistics.

Agri-footprint 8  is compliant with the ISO 14040 and 14044 guidelines and the limitations are transparently documented. The database is suitable for the use as background database in LCA studies for the agri-food sector.

Continuous improvements: our data team’s perspective on the review

Receiving over 200 review comments during Agri-footprint 8’s independent review helped us make valuable structural enhancements. Agroscope provided sharp, constructive feedback from the perspective of an end-user, mapping out practical applications and limitations practitioners must consider. This directly refined metadata clarity, resolved technical edge-case errors, and helped shape the long-term Agri-footprint development roadmap.

By validating Agri-footprint 8 against third-party scientific soundness, Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk provides sustainability consultants, LCA experts, and food enterprises with robust, audit-ready background data backed by verifiable quality.

Note: Agroscope’s complete critical review statement is published in Part 2 (Methodological Description) of the official Agri-footprint 8 documentation.
