Meeting SBTi FLAG requirements

Detailed insights with Agri-footprint FLAG

The SBTi FLAG guidance addresses greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals arising from Land Use Change (LUC), agriculture, forestry, soil, and biomass. For companies operating within the agricultural sector, FLAG is no longer optional, it is a requirement for aligning with SBTi’s global climate ambitions to limit global warming to 1.5 °C.

With Agri-footprint FLAG, we are supporting the increasingly large group of companies that need to transition their GHG inventories from traditional industrial emissions (non-FLAG) to the specific requirements of the land-based sector (FLAG). One of the critical challenges of SBTi FLAG is the need for detailed environmental data that is precisely aligned with this guidance, and Agri-footprint 7.0 FLAG meets that need.

Data split in multiple impact categories

Agri-footprint FLAG introduces a more granular approach to environmental reporting by categorizing product impacts according to SBTi FLAG guidance.

By providing these detailed impact breakdowns, Agri-footprint FLAG allows for precise hotspot insights that align directly with specific SBTi reduction targets. This ensures that your efforts are correctly steered toward required SBTi goals, such as the distinct reduction pathways for Land Use Change (LUC) emissions versus Land Management emissions.

Methodology: Linear Discounting for LUC impact

One of the methodological changes is the way emissions due LUC, including deforestation, are calculated. The SBTi FLAG Guidance requires the application of linear discounting over the last 20 years.

  • This approach considers more recent LUC events to have a higher impact than older ones, reflecting the urgency of recent land use changes.

  • This replaces the previous equal discounting approach, which spread the impact of LUC emissions evenly across the 20-year period.

Land Occupation emissions according to GHG Protocol's Land Sector & Removal Standard

According the GHG Protocol Land Sector & Removal Standard companies must now report exactly how much land they use, measured in hectares of cropland or grassland. This provides a clear picture of the physical “real estate” a supply chain occupies. Agri-footprint FLAG includes the Land Occupation results, empowering you to report on this in a compliant way.
